I've been fishing in the Pond out back all summer long. As everyone well knows, we have had a dry hot summer and it has taken it's toll on many lakes, streams, rivers and ponds. All summer long I have been out back chasing down largemouth bass. I've seen some really big ones, but as the summer went on they sought deeper waters. This pond is a natural spring pond with it's deepest point at about 15-20 ft. I've been catching 12-14 inch largemouth bass all summer long on spinners, rubber worm rigs, and topwater baits, but no really big fish to speak of.
It was on the afternoon of August 12 that I finally landed the Grandpa Largemouth Bass that I've seen only on occassions. I was boucing a pumpkinseed tub bait with a 1/16 ounce sinker hook in the deep end of the pond when I hooked up with Grandpa. I have enclosed the picture of my mom holding the fish that I landed. The fish measured in at 21" and weighing 10-12 lbs. I didn't have an official scale to weigh the fish but had many friends, neighbors and relatives judge the weight. I've also enclosed a photo of the measured fish.
Many have told me that fish this large are very rare for Michigan waters, considering the harsh winters and abreviated growing seasons. This fish is more indicative of a Florida Hog. Please enjoy and thanks for listening to my fish story…
